Eric Gray
Eric Gray Looking good for RB2 job
Fri, May 3, 2024, 9:48 AM
Gray is in good position to handle a bigger role in his second NFL season, according to Dan Duggan of The Athletic.
Analysis: New lead back Devin Singletary is unlikely to dominate backfield snaps the way Saquon Barkley did last season, leaving more work on the table for Gray and other backups. A 2023 fifth-round pick, Gray played in 13 games as a rookie, taking 23 touches for 70 yards on 65 snaps. Competition for backup roles behind Singletary doesn't appear especially fierce in New York, with Gray joined by fifth-round rookie Tyrone Tracy, veteran journeyman Deon Jackson, fourth-year pro Gary Brightwell and a couple of young UDFAs (Jashaun Corbin, Dante Miller).
Daniel Jones
Daniel Jones Running and cutting in ACL rehab
Wed, May 1, 2024, 7:37 PM
Jones (knee) said Wednesday that he's been running and cutting during his rehab from a torn right ACL, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Jones went on to say he's "doing everything," and the plan remains for him to be ready for training camp. The veteran QB tore his right ACL last November and also dealt with neck issues once again, though Jones said he's over that injury. The Giants didn't use a draft pick on a quarterback this offseason, only swapping out veteran backup Tyrod Taylor for Drew Lock in free agency. Jones should get every shot to remain the Giants' starter despite a dreadful 2023.
Darius Slayton
Darius Slayton Likely to remain starter
Wed, May 1, 2024, 6:39 PM
Slayton is expected to open the season as a starting wideout opposite rookie first-rounder Malik Nabers, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Slayton refused to report to voluntary offseason workouts, as he's entering the final year of a two-year deal and is seeking an extension. The Giants, however, haven't budged, and the team used the sixth overall pick in last week's NFL Draft to take Nabers after using a third-rounder on Jalin Hyatt in 2023. While Slayton is the favorite to open the summer as a starter, the team likely hopes Hyatt can push the veteran for snaps and targets. Nabers should easily pace this team in targets as a rookie.
Jalin Hyatt
Jalin Hyatt Bumps down depth chart
Wed, May 1, 2024, 6:32 PM
Hyatt is expected to be the Giants' top backup wide receiver in 2024 following the team's selection of Malik Nabers with the No. 6 overall pick in last week's NFL Draft, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Hyatt injured his hamstring in the season finale against the Eagles but is presumably over the issue by now and is coming off a rookie season that saw him secure 23 of 40 targets for 373 scoreless yards. He did average a strong 16.2 yards per catch, but the number of catchable passes thrown his way were few and far between as a downfield threat. Darius Slayton is expected to open the season opposite Nabers, with Wan'Dale Robinson in the slot, though the Giants would likely prefer to see Hyatt push Slayton for snaps.
Darius Slayton
Darius Slayton Seeking new deal
Wed, Apr 17, 2024, 3:35 PM
Slayton (thumb) hasn't reported to the Giants' voluntary workouts while he seeks a contract extension, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Slayton, who led the team with 770 receiving yards in 17 games in 2023, has attended the Giants' voluntary offseason program in the past. The 27-year-old wideout is in line to earn $6.2 million in the final year of his contract in 2024, but Slayton is evidently looking to amend those terms. At this stage, Slayton -- who is recovering from an offseason procedure on his right thumb -- is poised to retain a key role in a Giants wideout corps that currently includes Wan'Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt.
Daniel Jones
Daniel Jones Hopes to be fully cleared for camp
Mon, Apr 15, 2024, 12:45 PM
Jones noted Monday that he hasn't had any setbacks in his recovery from Nov. 22 surgery to address a right ACL tear, Darryl Slater of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: The report adds that Jones says he's past the neck issue that he dealt with last season prior to hurting his knee, indicating that it was just a stinger. At this stage, the QB is throwing and intends to participate in spring practices in some fashion, with Jones adding that he's aiming be fully cleared for the start of training camp. When healthy, Jones is in line to reclaim his starting role for the Giants, who added fellow signal-caller Drew Lock in free agency and also have Tommy DeVito in the roster. Moreover, it's possible that the team adds depth at the position in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Miles Boykin
Miles Boykin Signed by Big Blue
Tue, Apr 9, 2024, 2:44 PM
The Giants signed Boykin on Tuesday.
Analysis: In 17 regular-season games while working as a reserve wideout for the Steelers in 2023, Boykin caught three of his four targets for 17 yards. With the Giants, the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder will provide size and added depth to the squad's wide receiver corps, while also potentially adding value as a core special-teamer.
Daniel Jones
Daniel Jones Expected to start once healthy
Mon, Mar 25, 2024, 8:32 AM
Coach Brian Daboll isn't sure if Jones (knee) will be ready for Week 1 but told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero on Saturday that Jones will be "the guy" at quarterback once he's able to play.
Analysis: Daboll made it clear Drew Lock was signed as a backup, though that may entail dominating first-team reps throughout spring practices and into training camp. There's a potential complication for both Jones and Lock in the form of the upcoming NFL Draft, with New York picking sixth overall and perhaps considering a quarterback. On the other hand, an early pick could mean significant help for Jones, as popular mock draft matches at No. 6 include LSU WR Malik Nabers and Notre Dame OT Joe Alt. There are a number of potential hurdles for Jones this upcoming season, starting with his ongoing rehab from Nov. 22 surgery on a torn ACL. Later in the season, future injury guarantees in his contract could end up impacting the Giants' decision on who to start at quarterback, as was the case for Denver and Russell Wilson in 2023.
Isaiah Hodgins
Isaiah Hodgins Back with G-Men
Thu, Mar 21, 2024, 8:10 PM
Hodgins agreed to a contract with the Giants on Thursday.
Analysis: Hodgins has spent the majority of the last two seasons with the Giants and had flashes of productivity late in the 2022 campaign. New York didn't tender him a contract as a restricted free agent, but the sides have agreed to new terms. The addition of Isaiah McKenzie this offseason could push Hodgins further down the wide receiver depth chart, and the team is also rumored to be interested in some of the top pass catchers in this year's draft class. Given that, Hodgins' role with the Giants is currently unclear.
Chris Manhertz
Chris Manhertz Catches on with New York
Fri, Mar 15, 2024, 1:15 PM
The Giants have agreed to terms with Manhertz, Darryl Slater of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Manhertz, who turns 32 next month, has logged a total of 26 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns over the course of 120 games since entering the NFL in 2016. While the 6-foot-6, 235-pounder is off the fantasy radar, he does offer value as a blocker and can contribute on special teams. In any case, Manhertz, along with fellow newcomer Jack Stoll, bolsters the Giants' depth at tight end with top pass-catching option Darren Waller considering retirement.
Drew Lock
Drew Lock Says Jones is the starter
Fri, Mar 15, 2024, 11:10 AM
Lock said Friday that he's been told Daniel Jones (knee) is the Giants' starting quarterback, Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The question likely was asked in response to Seahawks GM John Schneider saying Thursday that he wanted to re-sign Lock but lost out to the Giants because they offered the opportunity to compete for a starting job. Lock seems to be suggesting otherwise, though Jones' recovery from an ACL tear suffered Nov. 5 could make things interesting. Jones' contract is another factor, with a $23 million injury guarantee for 2025 potentially creating a mid/late-season situation like the one we saw in Denver with Russell Wilson in 2023 (Wilson was benched to ensure he'd stay healthy and reduce the dead-cap charge for releasing him in the offseason).
Drew Lock
Drew Lock In the mix for starting job?
Fri, Mar 15, 2024, 8:21 AM
Seahawks GM John Schneider said Thursday that he wanted to re-sign Lock but wasn't able to because the Giants sold him on an opportunity to compete for a starting job, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Schneider revealed the interesting bit of information on The Wyman and Bob Show (710 Seattle Sports) shortly after trading for former Commanders QB Sam Howell. Reports suggest Lock signed with the Giants for backup money -- a one-year, $5 million contract, per ESPN -- but he may nonetheless have a chance to start with Daniel Jones (knee) coming off a disappointing season in which he averaged a career-worst 5.7 yards per pass attempt before suffering an ACL tear. Both quarterbacks are 2019 draft picks entering their age-27 campaigns, and while Jones has a full guarantee for his $36 million in compensation this year, the only guarantees thereafter are for injuries. Even if Jones ends up starting for most of the season, it could turn into a 2023 Russell Wilson situation where he's benched to avoid those injury guarantees and ensure the team can move on from him in the offseason. The various factors, including Jones' rehab from knee surgery, give Lock a good chance to play at some point this season, though things would get more complicated if the Giants bring in a rookie QB on Day 1 or 2 of the upcoming NFL Draft.
Jack Stoll
Jack Stoll Stays in the NFC East
Thu, Mar 14, 2024, 8:19 PM
The Giants agreed to terms with Stoll on a one-year contract Thursday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Undrafted out of Nebraska in 2021, Stoll ended up carving out a role with the Eagles, appearing in 50 of 51 regular-season games for Philly over the last three seasons. He recorded 20 catches for 183 scoreless yards on 27 targets in that span. In New York, Stoll will slide in behind Darren Waller and Daniel Bellinger.
Tommy DeVito
Tommy DeVito Gets competition for backup gig
Wed, Mar 13, 2024, 2:37 PM
DeVito is slated to be joined by Drew Lock behind starting quarterback Daniel Jones (knee), Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Analysis: DeVito looks to be sliding down to No. 3 on New York's depth chart, with Lock reportedly receiving a one-year, $5 million contract, per Brady Henderson of ESPN. As a rookie last year DeVito enjoyed a brief stretch in the spotlight following Jones' season-ending ACL tear, but he was replaced by a healthy Tyrod Taylor under center to close out the campaign. As it stands, DeVito could compete with Lock for the No. 2 role this offseason, but it's also possible the Giants add another name to the quarterback room in April's draft, where they hold the No. 6 overall pick.
Isaiah McKenzie
Isaiah McKenzie Set to sign with Giants
Tue, Mar 12, 2024, 6:06 PM
McKenzie and the Giants reached agreement Tuesday on a one-year contract,Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The deal reunites him with Giants head coach Brian Daboll, who was the offensive coordinator in Buffalo from 2018 to 2021. McKenzie was the Bills' third or fourth WR for much of that time, though his receiving production peaked in 2022 (42-423-4) under OC Ken Dorsey and then crashed in 2023 (11-82-0) when he left for Indianapolis. McKenzie turns 29 in April and may end up contributing more as a return man than wide receiver in New York.
Drew Lock
Drew Lock Joining Giants
Tue, Mar 12, 2024, 1:08 PM
Lock and the Giants have reached agreement on a contract, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Lock joins a quarterback room with Daniel Jones (knee), Tommy DeVito and Jacob Eason, after former Giant Tyrod Taylor reached an agreement with the Jets on Monday. It's a situation that strongly favors Lock for the No. 2 QB job, though the Giants may not be done making additions/subtractions to the group, with the upcoming NFL Draft offering potential to add a long-term replacement for Jones (who is rehabbing an ACL tear). Lock made four appearances for Seattle in 2023, including two starts, completing 48 of 76 passes (63.2 percent) for 543 yards (7.1 YPA), three touchdowns and three interceptions. He never panned out as a starter in Denver after going in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, but Lock at least looks like the part of a high-end backup after his moderately successful cameo with the Seahawks last year.
Devin Singletary
Devin Singletary Joining New York's backfield
Mon, Mar 11, 2024, 3:21 PM
Singletary is slated to sign a three-year deal with the Giants, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Per Schefter, Singletary's looming three-year pact with New York is a $16.5 million agreement that could be worth up to $19.5 million. The 26-year-old, who had 216 carries for 898 yards and four TDs to go along with 30 catches for 193 yards in 17 regular-season games with the Texans in 2023, steps into a situation where he'll be called upon to help fill in for the departure of Saquon Barkley (Eagles). It's a role that should yield enough touches for Singletary -- who profiles as the team's lead back at this stage -- to merit fantasy lineup consideration in 2024.
Gunner Olszewski
Gunner Olszewski Inks new deal
Mon, Mar 11, 2024, 2:19 PM
Olszewski re-signed with the Giants on a one-year contract Monday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Olszewski joined the G-Men last October after being released by the Steelers. Ultimately, he proved to be successful in handling the team's punt return duties, averaging 11.9 yards per return and taking one back for a touchdown in Week 17 against the Rams. He'll now have the opportunity to lock down that role again in 2024.
Saquon Barkley
Saquon Barkley Could talk with Eagles, Texans
Mon, Mar 11, 2024, 11:48 AM
The Eagles and Texans are interested in signing Barkley, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: While numerous other teams presumably have some level of interest, it sounds like Houston and Philadelphia are among the more serious candidates at the start of the free-agent negotiating period Monday afternoon. Barkley is widely viewed as the best RB among a strong group of free agents at the position, though it seems D'Andre Swift (Bears) and Tony Pollard (Titans) are ahead of him when it comes to reaching verbal agreements with suitors. Barkley figures to come out ahead of them financially, of course.
Darren Waller
Darren Waller Should decide on retirement soon
Thu, Mar 7, 2024, 8:35 AM
Waller said Wednesday that he's still undecided on retirement but will make a decision "pretty soon," Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: While he doesn't expect to decide before the start of the 2024 league year March 11, the 31-year-old tight end said he doesn't want it become "this drawn-out thing" and will give the Giants time to adjust if they end up needing to replace him. If he waits too long the team might take the decision out of his hands, as Waller doesn't have any guarantees remaining on his contract and is scheduled for at least $12 million in compensation each of the next three seasons. The Giants can free up $11.625 million in cap space by declaring Waller as a post-June 1 release, though multiple reports have suggested they'd rather have him back. The tight end was on pace to catch 85 passes for 923 yards through seven games in 2023 before a Week 8 hamstring injury derailed his season and led to a third straight year with at least five missed games. He had 2,341 yards and 12 TDs in 32 games between the 2019 and 2020 seasons, compared to 1,605 yards and six TDs in 32 games over the past three years combined.
